History helps choose where to test
Older painted buildings, demolition, traffic corridors, industry, fill, and previous structures can create uneven contamination. Mark drip lines, bare play areas, former outbuildings, compost sites, and intended food beds. Do not assume one sample represents the whole yard.
Use a testing plan that matches the decision
A laboratory or local extension service can advise on sampling depth, composite samples, separate hot spots, units, and interpretation. Home kits may not provide the accuracy needed for a gardening or child-exposure decision. Keep the report, map sample locations, and record any soil moved later.
Separate clean growing media from uncertain soil
Raised beds can reduce contact when they use verified clean soil and a durable barrier appropriate to the site. Prevent roots, erosion, digging animals, or maintenance from mixing layers. Cover bare areas with vegetation, mulch, or another suitable material and control dust during dry work.
Change daily pathways
Wash hands after gardening, leave soil-covered shoes and tools outside living areas, rinse produce, and supervise young children’s play. Locate eating areas away from bare soil. If tests show elevated lead, work with local health or environmental professionals on crop choice, access, and remediation rather than improvising removal.
